How much can you get bonded?

Surety capacity comes down to a few numbers. Enter them and we'll estimate your single-job and aggregate program limits — then send a written assessment of the capacity we can actually support and how to grow it.

A rough estimate appears here as you type. Working capital and net worth drive most of it.

Using the capacity calculator

What numbers do I need to use this calculator?

Working capital and net worth, both off your most recent balance sheet, plus the value of your largest completed job. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities. Net worth is total assets minus total liabilities. The largest-job figure is optional but makes the estimate more realistic.

Where do I find my working capital?

Take current assets — cash, receivables, retainage due within a year, underbillings, prepaid expenses — and subtract current liabilities, meaning payables, accrued expenses, overbillings, and the portion of any debt due within twelve months. It sits near the top of a contractor balance sheet, and your CPA can pull it in a minute.

Why does it ask for my largest completed job?

Because financials alone overstate what a surety will do for a contractor who has never run work at that size. Underwriters generally stretch to somewhere around twice the largest job you have finished, so a modest track record pulls the estimate down even when the balance sheet supports more. Leave it blank and you will see the balance-sheet-only figure.

How accurate is this estimate?

It applies the standard industry multiples to the numbers you enter, so it will land in the right neighborhood for most contractors. It is not a commitment. A real underwriter adjusts your balance sheet before applying any multiple — receivables past 90 days, underbillings, prepaid expenses, and anything due from owners are commonly discounted or excluded — so the working capital they use is often lower than the figure you typed in.

Why is my estimate lower than I expected?

Usually one of three things. The lower of working capital and net worth governs, so a strong net worth will not rescue thin working capital. A small largest-completed-job figure caps the result. Or the number you entered as working capital includes assets a surety would discount. If the figure looks wrong for your situation, send it over and we will tell you what a carrier would actually credit.

Is this the same as a bond quote?

No. Capacity is how much work a surety will bond for you. Premium is what an individual bond costs, usually a small percentage of the contract amount. For the cost of a specific bond, use the bond cost calculator instead.
